Big Business DESTROYS Facebook In Threatened Boycott Over Hate/Free Speech!

Zuckerburg caves under pressure from advertisers and loss of revenue in humiliating betrayal of first amendment rights for Americans!

Coca-Cola will suspend advertising on social media globally for 30 days at least.  As pressure builds on platforms to crack down on hate speech.

"There is no place for racism in the world and there is no place for racism on social media," the drinks maker's chairman and CEO James Quincey said.

He demanded "greater accountability and transparency" from social media firms.  

It came after Facebook said it would label potentially harmful or misleading posts left up for their news value.

Coco-Cola are not alone.  Levi Strauss & Co, Ben & Jerry's, Starbucks and other join the outcry.

"We are asking Facebook to commit to decisive change," CMO Jen Say said.

"We want to see meaningful progress towards ending the amplification of misinformation and hate speech and better addressing of political advertisements and content that contributes to voter suppression. While we appreciate that Facebook announced some steps in this direction today - it's simply not enough."

As a result of the boycott, shares in Facebook fell 8.3% on Friday, eliminating $56bn (£45bn) from the company's market value and knocking $7.2bn off Mr Zuckerberg's personal net worth, Bloomberg reported.

Who Decides What is Hate Speech?

In an age where 'everyone' is offended and, 'everyone's' feelings are hurt.  Can we trust that the people chosen to make the decisions on what is Hate Speech are fair and open-minded?  That these decision-makers have not been amassed from a hierarchy of Left-Wing viewpoints. ?

How will Facebook policies affect the 2020 Election?

Ellen L. Weintraub, a Democrat who then was chair of the Federal Election Commission, warned in a Washington Post opinion piece that such advert targeting had a history as “a potent weapon for spreading disinformation and sowing discord.”
Google has prohibited politicians from using its most powerful targeting advertising tools. Twitter decided to ban political ads altogether. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) urged Facebook to follow the lead of these other companies “rather than continuing to chase political advertising dollars.”
Facebook has considered such a move in an internal debate that looked at several types of restrictions. Including possibly banning political ads altogether.  Company officials felt 'political advertising produced a very small percentage of its multibillion-dollar revenue streams while generating a disproportionate amount of headaches'.
But when news leaked that Facebook was considering such changes, Trump made clear his oppositionHis campaign tweeted, amid red siren emoji, “IMPORTANT @facebook wants to take important tools away from us for 2020. Tools that help us reach more great Americans & lift voices the media & big tech choose to ignore!”
In January Facebook announced that it would increase the transparency of ad targeting ahead of the 2020 election but impose no new limits for politicians.
Rob Leathern, Facebook’s director of product management, made clear that the company had heard the political clamor on the issue.
“Unlike Google, we have chosen not to limit targeting of these ads,” Leathern wrote“We considered doing so, but through extensive outreach and consultations we heard about the importance of these tools for reaching key audiences from a wide range of NGOs, non-profits, political groups and campaigns, including both Republican and Democratic committees in the US.”

It can only be hoped that Facebook with its mostly Democratic workforce stays out of politics and recognises the difference between Differing View Points and Hate Speech!  In the hands of the privately-owned media, funded by mainstream advertisers bending to Virtue Signalling, Free Speech as we know it is doomed.
